OMG!!!
If you have been following me .. You’ll know I’m a Die Hard, Must Have, Freak over Lion Brands Mandala Yarn. When I was getting “groceries”… I made my usual quick dash threw the Yarn Isle at my local Wal-Mart. I put on the brakes so fast everything in the buggy flew to the front of the basket. Out of the corner of my eye I caught these beautiful bright colors. When I turned to look… I shreeked with excitement as these bright colors were Mandala Yarn.
When I did my review on Mandala yarn when it first came out. Lion Brand sold out quite quickly, though I was still able to find some at Wal-Mart. Lion Brand had stated they should have more stock this January. Which they did but I DID NOT GET THE MEMO on this new Mandala Yarn!!! WHAT?!?!?!? hahahaha
Not really paying attention to the label I grabbed 2 colors and went merrily on my way. After I got home I noticed the label alittle better.. Another WHAT occurred. π
This new vibrant beautifully colored yarn is a BABY version of the normal Mandala. After carefully inspecting the label… All the “technical”stuff is the same. Weight is the same, Hook size, yardage, grams/ounces.. All of that is identical…. Yet.. There must be a difference somewhere as when I first picked up the Baby Mandala yarn in the store I noticed a immediate difference.
The Picture below shows you a difference in the yarns. The top strand is the Regular Mandala. The Bottom yarn is the Baby Mandala.
- Regular Mandala has that “woolish” look to it.
- Baby Mandala has a smoother yarn look.
Feeling the 2 yarns together..
- Regular feels more dense.. Soft and squish-able but not bouncy.
- Baby feels springy.. Soft, airy type of squishy.
- Regular has a wide variety of gradient colors.. from deeps, neutrals, bold’s, etc. 24 different color cakes in all
- Baby has a smaller choice of gradient colors.. 12 cakes to choose from, the colors are still vibrant, eye catching, soft or bold.
Now, how they can have the same “stats” but feel different has me dumb founded but does it deter me from purchasing it.. Nope. I went back to the store today and rummaged around to find more colors. I ended up bringing home 2 more colors. So now I have 4 of the 12 colors that Lion Brand has released in this new yarn.
Summary…
Even though these yarns are similar at the core they are very different to the eye and feel. My thoughts on the new Baby Mandala is this…
If you love working with Mandala your gonna love the baby mandala also.
But if they are the same.. you say.. why buy the new baby yarn? Because ..Mandala has that Woolish texture which isn’t something you would want a baby to suck on. I’ve had fiber hairs from mandala stuck in my mouth after licking it to get it threw the tapestry needle… Yes I put the yarn in my mouth hahaha… don’t worry that part gets cut off π
Baby Mandala having a smoother texture there is less worry about fuzzing or bits coming off ..if the child manages to put it in their mouth.
Baby Mandala also, in my opinion seem more airy, breathable. So there is a couple of differences between the two. Plus.. Who doesn’t want the excuse to buy more yarn π
I will up date this post when I have actually worked with the yarn.
My original post on Mandala yarn Review can be read here….
I was able to only find a few colors of Baby Mandala at my local Wal-Mart. or you can go to Lion Brand Yarn and order some where all the colors are available right now.
